Data Publications | Documentation of the data publications

Reports done by US Government Agencies or by contracted parties based on the data

These publications are one step removed from the raw data because they tend to represent the first or second analysis of newly published data. The Supplementary Tables have aggregate analysis generally by categories and the Surveys present deeper analysis that comes out later. There is not much consistency in filenames over time, nor in what are termed below as “Type of File”. For instance, there are “E.D. TABS,” and “ED TABS.” The last publication with that designation in the title was one of the “Public Libraries Surveys.” The next one was a “First Look,” and since then, they have been “Summary Reports” A similar situation exists with filenames: there is little consistency over time and I have cases where the same content was issued at different times in different file names.

The bulk of the publications here are the work of NCES (though the FSCS program) or IMLS (through the Public Library Survey.) However, I have started to add publications from the Library Services Branch, Office of Education, of the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare (HEW.) Frank Schick was the Assistant Director and published a good bit on libraries and library data. I am going to add publications of his. Likely, I will collect his and publications of Mary Jo at least. The first two publications of the Library Services Branch are at the bottom of the first table and they come from 1961 and have a good bit of data but not on the granular level that we see in the NCES-IMLS data. They are more like the summary reports from their data. Also, both have lists of publications from the Library Services Branch on the last pages of each of these two reports. There is quite a number.

Also note the documents related to the history of these data collection efforts. It is my hope to collect more of these kinds of publications about this history.

For this Archive, a goal is to provide the documents and a detailed record of the publications so that they are unambiguously described. Apparent duplicates are included because they might not be duplicates.
